Head Instructor · Founder

Matt "Sumo" Shriner

A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt and 2x IBJJF World Masters Champion, promoted under coral belt Marco Nascimento. His path runs decades deep - full-contact karate in Japan, Muay Thai at Fairtex headquarters in Thailand, and a lifetime on the mats. Those decades of competing and training into his masters years led to the development of Longevity Jiu Jitsu - an approach built for older athletes to train hard, stay healthy, and keep rolling for life.

07 The Story

Why the name
“Sumo”?

It's a fair question. Early on, Matt often competed in the Ultra Heavy - aka “Unlimited” - category, usually giving up plenty of size to the bigger competitors out there. Somewhere along the way the nickname “Sumo” stuck, and it's followed him ever since - even though these days he's usually in the Super Heavy bracket.
